Superior Public Works Department Company Information
General information
The Town of Superior is a suburb of Denver, Colorado located in Boulder County that grew from about 250 people in 1990 to nearly 12,000 today. Superior's history is one of coal mining. The first mines in the area were developed in the late 1800's. The Town itself was founded in 1896 and incorporated in 1904. The Town reportedly was named after the "superior" quality of coal found in the area.
Mining was the major force in Superior's history until the Industrial Mine closed in 1945. Subsequently, many people moved out of the area and the Town evolved into a quiet ranching and farming community.
In the 1990s the Rock Creek Subdivision was built resulting in an increase in home and population making the Town of Superior what it is today. From 1987 through 2006 approximately 2,700 single-family homes and 1,800 multi-family homes have been developed.
Future development plans of the Town include commercial development, retail development, multi-family residential units, and single family homes. The Town is approximately four square miles in area has 540 acres of park and open space, 25 miles of trails and two outdoor pools. There is one elementary school and one K-8 school. Superior’s residents are well-educated, largely professional people who value its natural setting, advantageous location and outdoor activities.
